Mitigating Mycotoxin Contamination in Kano, Katsina, and Kaduna States:

Goldagric's Collaboration with FMARD

Mycotoxin contamination in food and feed poses a significant threat to public health, agricultural productivity, and trade in Nigeria. In response to this challenge, Goldagric, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD), undertook a project to study mycotoxin contamination in key crops and develop strategies for its control in Kano, Katsina, and Kaduna States.

• Impact and Outcomes

  Improved understanding of mycotoxin contamination: The project generated valuable data on the prevalence and levels of mycotoxin contamination in the target states, helping to inform policy and guide targeted interventions.
  Development of mitigation strategies: The project identified key factors contributing to mycotoxin contamination and developed strategies to address them, such as improved crop varieties, better storage practices, and the use of biological control agents.
  Enhanced capacity of stakeholders: The project strengthened the capacity of farmers, extension workers, and other stakeholders to manage mycotoxin contamination, contributing to safer and healthier agricultural products.

• Key Project Activities

  Mycotoxin prevalence assessment: Goldagric and FMARD conducted a comprehensive survey of mycotoxin contamination in the target states, involving collection and analysis of crop samples from farms, markets, and storage facilities.
  Design of survey instrument, recruitment and training of enumerators, field testing of survey instrument, actual field survey, data collation and analysis, production of data base and reports with recommendations on problem/constraints analysis, possible intervention measures.
  Our consultants also were responsible for the development of training strategies and materials as well as the actual conduct of training for aflatoxin control for Agricultural Extension Agents and preparation of project report.
