Combating Climate Change Impacts on Small-Scale Fishers in Nigeria's North Central Zone:

Goldagric's Adaptation Strategies

Nigeria's North Central Zone is home to numerous fishing communities that rely on the sector for their livelihoods. However, the increasing impacts of climate change, such as unpredictable weather patterns, rising temperatures, and decreased fish populations, threaten the sustainability of these communities.
To address these challenges, Goldagric, in collaboration with the Department of Climate Change under the Federal Ministry of Environment, developed a project aimed at promoting climate-resilient fishing practices and enhancing the adaptive capacity of small-scale fishers in the region.

• Impact and Outcomes

  Increased awareness of climate change impacts: The project significantly improved the understanding of climate change impacts on fishing communities in the North Central Zone.
  Strengthened institutional capacity: The project strengthened the capacity of local institutions and stakeholders to address climate change challenges and support fishing communities in adapting to the impacts.
  Enhanced adaptive capacity: The implementation of climate-resilient practices and technologies resulted in improved adaptive capacity and reduced vulnerability to climate-related risks.

• Key Project Activities

  Climate vulnerability assessment: Goldagric and the Department of Climate Change conducted assessments to identify the key climate-related risks and vulnerabilities faced by fishing communities in the region.
  Development of adaptation strategies: Development of survey tools, field survey/assessment, Data analysis and compilation, preparation of three Reports.
  Capacity building and training: Fishers, community leaders, and local government officials in the 6 states and FCT received training on climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable fisheries management.
