Tackling Aflatoxin Contamination in Nigeria: Goldagric's Collaboration with IITA and USAID

Aflatoxin contamination in crops poses a significant threat to food security, public health, and agricultural trade in Nigeria. To address this pressing issue, Goldagric, in partnership with the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and funded by USAID, implemented a project aimed at reducing aflatoxin prevalence and building capacity for its control in Abia, Imo, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Oyo, and Osun States.

• Impact and Outcomes

  Improved understanding of aflatoxin contamination: The project generated valuable data on the prevalence of aflatoxin contamination in the target states, which can inform policy and guide targeted interventions.
  Enhanced capacity of stakeholders: The project strengthened the capacity of farmers, extension workers, and other stakeholders to prevent and control aflatoxin contamination, contributing to safer and healthier agricultural products.
  Increased adoption of Aflasafe: The project led to increased awareness and adoption of Aflasafe technology among farmers, resulting in reduced aflatoxin levels in crops and improved food safety.

• Key Project Activities

  Aflatoxin prevalence assessment: The project conducted a comprehensive survey of aflatoxin contamination in the target states, involving collection and analysis of crop samples from farms, markets, and storage facilities.
  Capacity building: Goldagric and IITA organized training sessions, workshops, and field demonstrations for farmers, extension workers, and other stakeholders on good agricultural practices, post-harvest management, and the use of Aflasafe to mitigate aflatoxin contamination.
  Goldagric Staff also were responsible for the development of training strategies and materials as well as the actual conduct of training for aflatoxin control for Agricultural Extension Agents and preparation of project report.
