Seed Systems for Pasture and Forage Development in Nigeria: A Goldagric Initiative

The Goldagric-led project on enhancing seed systems for pasture and forage development in Nigeria has made significant strides in addressing the challenges faced by the livestock sector. By increasing the availability of quality forage seeds, building local capacity, and creating awareness, the project has laid a strong foundation for sustainable livestock production and improved livelihoods for smallholder farmers.

• Impact and Outcomes

  Enhanced local capacity: The capacity of local institutions and farmers in forage seed production and management was strengthened, ensuring the sustainability of the seed system.
  Increased adoption of improved forages: The project created awareness among farmers about the benefits of improved forages, leading to increased adoption and better livestock management practices.

• Key Project Activities

  Seed multiplication and production: Selected forage varieties were multiplied and produced using modern seed production techniques to ensure quality and genetic purity.
  Capacity building and training: Farmers, extension agents, and researchers were trained in forage seed production, storage, and management practices.
  Design of guide for PPD, survey instrument, interactive sessions with stakeholders and crafting of recommendations and preparation of project report.
